Finnish language and culture in Kingston-upon-Thames

Our school is part of a global network of part-time Finnish schools. Our aim is to teach the Finnish language and culture to children as well as adults. Our students usually have a parent or grandparent of Finnish origin or they come from Finnish families living in the Greater London area for work reasons.

We meet at Tiffin School (see "Our Location" page for directions) for two hours every other Saturday morning during term time - see the Calendar page for school times/dates and details of other events.

Have you ever wondered:

· Why do children reply in English, although they seem to understand what you say in Finnish?
· How should the Finnish-speaking parent react when children reply in English?
· Can the English parent practice their Finnish with the children?
· Should parents correct grammar mistakes?
· Does it matter if a parent switches languages while speaking?
· Is it likely to be a passing phase, if children reply in English?
· How can you help children expand their vocabulary?
· How do siblings affect each other’s bilingualism?
· Is it possible to maintain Finnish while children go through English schooling?
· Why do children stop wanting to listen to books in Finnish?
· Can you turn English homework into a resource for learning Finnish?
· How can you use Finnish meaningfully with an adult or older child learning Finnish?
· Should children be taught to read in Finnish?
· Why does it become harder and harder for the parent to keep using Finnish as the children grow older?

If you have, come along to have a chat with Soile about it. She has been parenting trilingual children for over a decade and has spent even longer figuring out what the academics say about these things.

Right now Soile is completing her Kone Foundation funded PhD, at Goldsmiths University of London, on Finnish Saturday school children here in London. Her research is specifically about why do some children of a Finnish parent grow up to be bilingual while others become English monolinguals.
Soile will introduce her ‘Bilingual cake’ to help you map out the strengths and weaknesses of your family in raising bilingual children.
‘The Bilingual cake’ has been specifically designed to help parents to see how to make a real difference to their own children’s bilingual lives.
If you would like to read something beforehand in Finnish, check out Soile’s blog in Etäkoulu Kulkuri: http://www.peda.net/veraja/kulkuri/maailmalla/soile

Interactive games for learning the Finnish language

Craig Gibson has sent a link to his Digital Dialects Finnish site, in which you can practise Finnish either written or with audio support. This is worth testing!
